However, the truth is that most people don\u2019t get this amount of shut eye on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>But if you want to make gains with your weight loss efforts, you might want to make sleep as one of your top priorities.<\/p>\n<h2>Why sleep helps with weight loss<\/h2>\n<p>Many studies have been done regarding sleep and weight and it\u2019s clear that there is a definite link between poor sleep and weight gain. There are several reasons for this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poor sleep can increase your appetite<\/strong>. This is because it interferes with hormones that regulate hunger and fullness. This is because lack of sleep dulls the activity in the front part of your brain which is responsible for self-control and decision making. When you\u2019re tired, you\u2019re more likely to choose foods high in calories.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re also likely to <strong>consume more calories when you\u2019re sleep deprived<\/strong>. Researchers aren\u2019t sure whether it\u2019s related to hormone levels, poor self-control or increased levels of hunger, but there is a definite link.<\/p>\n<p>Poor sleep also means you\u2019re <strong>less likely to exercise<\/strong>, because it\u2019s too hard to get out of bed or off the couch to get to your regular exercise session \u2013 meaning you\u2019re not burning calories required for weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, lack of sleep <strong>causes increased levels of stress<\/strong>, which plays havoc with your weight. Stress increases your appetite and cravings for unhealthy food, as well as releasing a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol causes inflammation in the body, and promotes weight gain, especially around the stomach.<\/p>\n<h2>What can you do?<\/h2>\n<p>The takeaway message here is to get more sleep!<\/p>\n<p>Try going to bed earlier each night and making sleep a priority for you. Avoid napping in the day if you\u2019re tired, as this will prevent you from sleeping well at night.<\/p>\n<p>Pay attention to <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/foods-to-avoid-before-bed\/\">what you\u2019re eating and drinking before bed<\/a>, to ensure that you get quality sleep.
