However, women experience more disrupted sleep and therefore lower quality of sleep. It\u2019s believed women sleep longer than men in an attempt to make up for this lower quality sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do men and women sleep differently?<\/h2>\n<h3>Hormones<\/h3>\n<p>A key reason for the differences between men and women&#8217;s sleep relate to hormones. Shifts in hormone production over the course of a woman\u2019s life can create significant problems. These can be related to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause.<\/p>\n<p>For example, pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) can contribute to disruptions to sleep. Almost 50% of pregnant women experience <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/what-is-insomnia\/\">insomnia-like<\/a> symptoms which may continue after birth. And for women experiencing <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/menopause-and-sleep\/\">menopause<\/a>, up to 85% of them may experience hot flushes and night sweats that significantly disturb their sleep<\/p>\n<h3>Sleep Cycles<\/h3>\n<p>Another contributing factor is that men and women have different sleep cycles, which typically begins between the ages of 30 and 40. On a normal night of sleep, most people progress through 3 to 5 sleep cycles, that are made up of distinct <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/what-are-the-stages-of-sleep-and-why-are-they-important\/\">sleep stages<\/a>. Women tend to spend more time in the deep sleep stage and less time in the light sleep stage.<\/p>\n<h3>Circadian Rhythm<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/what-is-a-circadian-rhythm\/\">circadian rhythm<\/a> is a 24-hour internal body clock that controls your cycles of sleep and wakefulness. On average, this is about 6 minutes shorter for women which means women are more likely to sleep and wake up earlier, and therefore identify as \u2018morning people\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Health Issues<\/h3>\n<p>Other health issues can also contribute to differences between men and women\u2019s sleep. Research has shown that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women are more likely to have insomnia and <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/what-is-restless-leg-syndrome\/\">restless leg syndrome<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Women are more likely to be diagnosed with <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/sleep-and-mental-health\/\">depression and anxiety<\/a> which interfere with falling and staying asleep<\/li>\n<li>Women also have higher rates of <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/tips-dealing-incontinence\/\">incontinence<\/a> and overactive bladder which causes them to wake frequently during the night<\/li>\n<li>Men are more likely to have <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/how-to-stop-snoring\/\">obstructive sleep apnoea<\/a> which causes poorer sleep quality<\/li>\n<li>Men have higher rates of cardiovascular disease and lung problems which negatively affect sleep<\/li>\n<li>Men are also more likely to use alcohol and <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/smoking-and-sleep\/\">tobacco<\/a> which interrupts sleep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What can you do?<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember that while there are sleep differences between men and women, sleep varies considerably from person to person and is influenced by a wide range of factors. The best thing you can do to ensure you get a good nights\u2019 sleep is to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stick to a regular sleep schedule (i.e. going to bed and waking up at the same time)<\/li>\n<li>Avoid staying up late to watch TV<\/li>\n<li>Avoid <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/are-electronics-before-bed-interfering-with-your-sleep\/\">electronic devices<\/a> before bed<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/how-to-relax-before-bed\/\">Relax<\/a> before bed<\/li>\n<li>Avoid <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/sleep-and-caffeine-how-much-is-too-much\/\">caffeine<\/a> and other stimulants before bed<\/li>\n<li>Go easy on <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/how-alcohol-affects-your-sleep\/\">alcohol<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/foods-to-avoid-before-bed\/\">eat too much<\/a> before bedtime<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/exercise-and-sleep\/\">Exercise regularly<\/a>, although not too close to bedtime<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you\u2019re sleeping on a <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/top-tips-for-choosing-the-right-mattress\/\">comfortable, supportive mattress<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At BedGuard, we\u2019ve been helping men, women and children get a good nights\u2019 sleep since 2009.
