Recent studies and surveys indicate that almost 60% of us have symptoms 3-4 times a week. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>having <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/what-is-insomnia\/\">trouble falling asleep<\/a><\/li>\n<li>having trouble staying asleep<\/li>\n<li>waking too early<\/li>\n<li>not being able to get back to sleep<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And all these problems mean that many of us (around 40%) fail to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.<\/p>\n<h2>What stops us from sleeping well?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the research, there are several factors that mean we don&#8217;t sleep well. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lifestyle \u2014 being too busy and living with <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/is-stress-affecting-your-sleep\/\">high levels of stress<\/a>, especially work stress<\/li>\n<li>Environment \u2014 living in noisy environments, <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/baby-in-the-house-say-goodbye-to-sleeping-through-the-night\/\">having children<\/a> and pets that wake us, bedrooms being too hot, cold, or not dark enough.<\/li>\n<li>Electronics \u2014 many of us continue to use <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/are-electronics-before-bed-interfering-with-your-sleep\/\">electronic devices<\/a> right up until we go to sleep<\/li>\n<li>No healthy bedtime routine \u2014 working before going to bed, drinking alcohol or caffeine before bed, using tobacco or drugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A good bedtime routine is key<\/h2>\n<p>One of the best ways to get a good night\u2019s sleep is to <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/whats-the-best-bedtime-routine\/\">develop a good bedtime routine<\/a>, practice it and stick to it. Things you can do include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have a consistent bedtime and wakeup time<\/li>\n<li>make time to unwind from the day and avoid working or having serious discussions before bed<\/li>\n<li>avoid screens an hour or two before bed<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/foods-to-help-you-sleep\/\">eat lightly<\/a>, making sure you\u2019re not too full or hungry<\/li>\n<li>avoid <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/sleep-and-caffeine-how-much-is-too-much\/\">caffeine<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/how-alcohol-affects-your-sleep\/\">alcohol<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/smoking-and-sleep\/\">tobacco<\/a> and other drugs before bed<\/li>\n<li>do relaxing things such as reading, listening to music, taking a bath or meditating before bed<\/li>\n<li>make your bedroom a sanctuary and reserve it for sleep and intimacy<\/li>\n<li>use <a href=\"http:\/\/bedguard.com.au\/herbs-for-sleep-do-they-really-work\/\">herbal teas<\/a> or aromatherapy oils that have a calming effect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What to do if you can\u2019t sleep<\/h2>\n<p>If it\u2019s been more than 20 minutes and you still have trouble dropping off or going back to sleep, you should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>get up and move to a different part of the house<\/li>\n<li>avoid looking at screens like your phone, tablet or television<\/li>\n<li>sit quietly in the dark and breathe deeply<\/li>\n<li>turn on a lamp (not too bright) and read for 20 minutes<\/li>\n<li>listen to soothing, relaxing music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Avoid laying in bed, tossing and turning as this can create an unhealthy mental connection between your environment and sleeping routine.
